Renfrew company develops hand sanitiser without harsh chemicals

A Renfrewshire company says it has launched a new hand sanitiser that can kill coronavirus in seconds despite containing no harmful chemicals.

Adalec Ltd, based in Renfrew, has created Chlorisal, a sanitiser which, it insists, can destroy 99.9 per cent of all bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores.

Chlorisal uses just Scottish water and salt, which when brought together with a spark of electricity creates electrolysed water.

Hypochlorous Acid is the active ingredient which is also produced naturally in the body to fight infection.

Despite its green credentials, the sanitiser is, the company states, 30 times more effective than bleach.

Ken Adams, managing director of Adalec Ltd, told the Express: “Chlorisal is a new brand which is making a major impact in changing how we use hand sanitiser and disinfectants.

“It is not a purely covid-related product, but one that is gaining much attention at this time.

“Produced without any harsh chemicals or alcohol, it is hypoallergenic, non-toxic, environmentally-friendly and 100 per cent biodegradable.

“It is an exciting product that can be of real benefit to individuals and businesses.”

Ken believes Chlorisal is specifically good news for people with sensitive skin and those with allergies, as they usually find alcohol-based sanitiser extremely painful to use.

It can, he says, also be used to keep people safe without causing irritation for these groups of people.

He passionately believes in reducing the use of harsh chemicals for disinfecting and hand-sanitising, arguing the benefits to individuals and the environment are huge.

He added: “The extensive use of concentrated alcohol hand sanitiser can lead to sore, dry hands, even for those without skin conditions.

“For those with dermatitis, alcohol hand-sanitisers can be almost impossible to use.

“Chlorisal is gentle on skin and by spraying on face masks, can even be used to help with the dreaded maskne!”

Ken, who has a background in developing and marketing green products, has been exploring the benefits of electrolysed water with manufacturers for two years.

He is now working with a wide range of companies from nurseries to care homes including Paisley’s Carriagehill Nursery.

Manager Heather Murphy has been using the Chlorisal spray and hand sanitiser to keep staff and children safe during the pandemic.

She said: “Obviously when coronavirus first hit we were advised to up our cleaning schedule.

“We were advised to use stronger products but I had concerns about using these around young children, especially those who have allergies, asthma and
eczema.

“We were having a look around for products and came across Chlorisal.

“It offered an alternative that was still proven to kill covid and other bacteria without the harsh chemicals.”

Explaining she trialled the products at home and with her daughter who has eczema, Heather added: “She was able to use the hand sanitiser liberally without it affecting her eczema so we decided to go ahead with it and we have been using it successfully in the nursery for months.”

Chlorisal is available as a hand-held trigger spray, disinfectant for misting or fogging buildings and as a hand sanitiser.
