Reneé Rapp On Robert Irwin, Aussie Fans & Her Favourite Swear Word: ‘Love That’

Reneé Rapp has shared her honest thoughts on Australian culture during her first trip Down Under, and is it too early to make her an honorary Aussie?

The pop icon and non-media trained diva sat down with Brooke Blurton at Pinterest’s exclusive fan Q&A on Wednesday night to chat about music, life and travel ahead of her first-ever Sydney shows. The unfiltered convo dived into star signs, tour life and tramp stamps, but before you feel too much FOMO, PEDESTRIAN.TV was in the audience to give you the highlights.

Reneé Rapp’s overall thoughts on Australia

While she couldn’t remember exactly how long she’s been in Australia, let alone what day of the week it was, Reneé confessed she’s been loving her trip so far.

“It’s very hot, [but] I’m used to the weather,” she said. “Where I grew up, the summers are really hot, and the summers are really, really humid, so it’s actually not super far off from here. I mean, it’s far as fuck, but it’s not far in terms of the climate. It ain’t that different.”

She revealed she had been told by many people in the US that “Australian fans are the best”, and she wasn’t disappointed after her first show in Brisbane on Tuesday night.

“Everyone was so much fucking fun,” she gushed. “I always feel like a show is, for me, to be honest, 75 per cent the audience and 25 per cent me. I get so much from how the audience feels, and last night, everyone was really, really, really in a good way, so I had a fantastic night, and I had a fantastic show because the audience was so much fun. So that was my highlight.”

The “Leave Me Alone” singer is set to perform in Sydney on Thursday and Friday before flying to Melbourne to headline at the Australian Open on Saturday.

Her Aussie animal encounters

Reneé told Brooke that, unlike most Americans visiting Australia for the first time, she wasn’t scared of encountering our wildlife thanks to her upbringing in North Carolina.

“We have shit that would kill us, too!” she said. “There were a bunch of copperheads in my backyard growing up as a kid. It’s a very venomous snake, and it’s also not a cute snake either, so you have to be aware of that. So I’m not really bothered. I’m not put off by what y’all bring, it’s ok to me.”

She did admit, however, that she has mixed feelings about spiders, describing them as “ugly” and “somewhat sexy”.

“Long legs, tiny torso. Love that!” she joked.

Reneé said she also met a koala during her visit to Brisbane and initially had “hug a kangaroo” on her bucket list before realising how big they are.

“I guess I didn’t think of like, the size. I feel like they’re kind of like big as shit,” she remarked. “But yesterday I met a quokka, and I got to hold a quokka. 10 months old, it was awesome. I was like an Irwin yesterday, it was so gassed.”

Her opinion on Robert Irwin

Speaking of the Irwins, Reneé told Brooke that she hasn’t met Robert Irwin yet but thinks they would get along because of their *uncanny* similarities.

“No, but he’s blonde and white, we look the same. We look exactly the same,” she said. “Love him. We look the same, so it’s totally fine.”

She also described Irwin’s recent thirst traps as “awesome” and “great” but “not [her] thing”, and look, fair enough, queen.

Her favourite Aussie word

Besides saying “Aussie Aussie Aussie” so many times at her Brisbane show that her voice hurt the next day, Reneé admitted her favourite Aussie slang is the c-word.

“C*nt’s big here, I like that you guys like that,” she said to huge applause from the audience. “I feel like when I say that sometimes in America people are still like ‘Ooh!’. I’m like, god, with all of the horrendous shit that we do, that’s what fucking scares you guys? C*nt?”

She added that the word is “so popular in [her] vernacular”, but she had no idea how widely-used it was in Australia.

“I know it’s a huge thing in the UK as well,” she said. “You guys have some crossover — I guess the British have colonised everyone, so that’s why, but that’s like the whole thing, right? I’m new here, figuring it out with y’all!”

All hail our chaotic queen, may she continue releasing absolute bangers and refusing proper media training.
