Reece James proved right as Billy Gilmour earns first ever start for Scotland against England

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour has been handed his first-ever international start for Scotland's clash with England on Friday night.

Gilmour has impressed for the Blues whenever given the chance under both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, featuring 22 times across the last two seasons.

The 20-year-old's undeniable talent even earned him a spot in Scotland's Euro 2020 squad despite never even featuring for The Tartan Army's at senior level.

However, Gilmour did get his first taste of international action in the last few weeks, coming off the bench against the Netherlands and Luxembourg, showcasing his incredible natural ability during both displays.

Still, he found himself on the bench on Monday as Scotland were defeated 2-0 by the Czech Republic on Monday afternoon in a frustrating display at Hampden Park.

Scotland lacked control in midfield with both Scott McTominay and John McGinn struggling to impose themselves on proceeding, something that has likely forced Steve Clarke to start Gilmour for tonight's trip to Wembley.

But Chelsea's Reece James is a big fan of his club teammate, and believes he can come good for Scotland

“Billy is one of the best young lads coming through at Chelsea and one of the best young lads coming through in the world as well,” he said.

“He’s a great lad and I think that his ability speaks for itself.”

Clarke will be hoping his decision comes good as Scotland desperately need at least a point if they want to progress in the group.

The Tartan Army will play Croatia at Hampden Park on Tuesday in what will be their final group game.
