Redskins working to acquire Case Keenum from Broncos; How that affects the Eagles

If you’re Doug Pederson and the Philadelphia Eagles, you love the idea of at least two of your most hated NFC East rivals, having some uncertainty at the quarterback position. The New York Giants look set to proceed with Eli Manning under center in 2019, while likely drafting a quarterback via the draft.

For the Washington Redskins, the thought was that they’d try to sign Nick Foles, with the news that Alex Smith will miss the entire 2019 season with a leg injury. It looks like Jay Gruden and company are going to do one better by entertaining the masses, with the news that the Redskins are set to acquire Case Keenum from the Broncos via trade.

The News was reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

During his one season in Denver, Keenum completed 62.3 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, in 16 games.

For the Eagles, it provides decent but not great quarterbacks to prepare for twice next season, with Jim Schwartz and company now knowing that they’ll face Colt McCoy or Case Keenum. As a team, the Redskins would be better off going with McCoy, who was knocked out for the season last year, after he went down with a leg injury in the second quarter of the team’s 28-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Redskins always seem confident rolling with McCoy as the starter, as he’s a favorite of coach Gruden’s and has been in the system since 2014.

For the Eagles and the possibility of facing Keenum twice next season, Jim Schwartz’s defense gave the quarterback fits in the 2018 NFC Championship Game, while a member of the Minnesota Vikings.

In that game, Keenum completed 58.3% of his passes for just one touchdown, two interceptions, and a 63.8 passer rating.

Keenum signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the Broncos after his strong 2017 season with the Vikings. Now he’s headed to the NFC East.
