It turns out the Washington Redskins were sniffing around Joe Flacco.
Flacco, of course, got traded from the Baltimore Ravens to the Denver Broncos in a ho-hum move between a team looking to build around Lamar Jackson and a team looking to find anything at all at the position.
The Redskins fall under the same category as the Broncos in this instance, so it isn’t surprising to find out they had talked about a Flacco trade, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
In fact, it turns out the Redskins might have helped accelerate the Ravens-Broncos deal:
As ESPN’s John Keim points out, the Redskins’ cap situation made a deal for Flacco’s massive contract unrealistic. It should be noted that this does not mention how hard the Redskins might have tried to acquire Flacco. They could have had real interest in pursuing a trade, or they could have just been kicking the tires, so to speak.
Washington also is stuck paying Alex Smith more than $20 million this season, even though he is not likely to play.
What this does do, though, is show the Redskins are seriously thinking about the quarterback position in the wake of the news dealing with Alex Smith.
If Flacco was a target, it will be interesting to see who else the Redskins go after this offseason.
