Redskins announce firing of Jay Gruden

The Washington Redskins announced the firing of head coach Jay Gruden on Monday morning after the team’s 0-5 start.

Team owner Daniel Snyder and president Bruce Allen informed Gruden of the decision Monday. The team announced that offensive line coach Bill Callahan will take over as interim head coach.

The team issued the following statement:

Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility. Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond.

The Redskins also announced a press conference for 1 p.m. ET.

Gruden finishes his run in Washington with a regular-season record of 35-49-1 in five-plus seasons. However, he led the Redskins to only one playoff appearance, a 35-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round in 2015. He was under contract through 2020.
