Redmoon Theater agrees it owes $127K in late rent and fees

Dec. 23--Redmoon Theater has agreed it owes $127,000 in late rent and fees to its landlord and must vacate its Pilsen space by next week, according to documents filed Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court.

The theater, which announced Monday it is going out of business, must move out of its space at 2120 S. Jefferson St. before Dec. 31. The late rent and fees, which date back to August, total $127,730.10.

Attorneys for Redmoon and its landlord Phillip Mumford appeared in court Wednesday morning to present the agreement to Associate Judge Leonard Murray after Mumford sued Redmoon for back rent in October. An attorney for Redmoon declined to comment to the Tribune.

Mumford's attorney said his client has been hurt by not receiving rent payments.

"It's sad (Redmoon) is a Chicago institution but you have to pay the rent," attorney Marc S. Lichtman said.

As part of the deal, Redmoon agreed not to host its annual New Year's Eve party, which the performance company recently canceled. Redmoon has until Jan. 21 to remove any property from the Pilsen location.

The deal signals the end of the 25-year-old nonprofit company, which experienced recent financial and performance troubles. Redmoon hosted the 2014 Great Chicago Fire Festival, which was criticized for its main props not being able to catch fire. A proposal to host a hologram concert by controversial Chicago rapper Chief Keef over the summer was thwarted by Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office.
