Red Wings fall to Lightning in OT, 2-1

DETROIT _ Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha showed their punchier sides and Henrik Zetterberg provided yet another goal.

The Detroit Red Wings' efforts Friday at Joe Louis Arena came up short as they lost in overtime to the Tampa Bay Lightning, 2-1. Nikita Kucherov scored the winning goal.

The 16th goal of the season from Henrik Zetterberg and 18 saves from Petr Mrazek gave the Wings a 1-0 lead going into the third period.

Tomas Nosek, who looks more confident with the puck every game he plays, had a chance on the opening shift of the third with a shot from the left circle.

The Lightning tied it up at 5:53 when Ondrej Palat swiped in a loose puck from just outside the crease. Dylan Larkin replied with a great chance when he got the puck deep in Tampa's zone, but his shot was stopped and there was no teammate there for a juicy rebound.

A fifth power play for the Wings went for naught. The Wings went on their fourth penalty kill with 3 minutes to go in regulation, doing so good a job Mrazek only saw one shot.

Mrazek made two big saves on Jonathan Drouin in overtime, while the Wings passed up shooting when they got the puck.

Considering the Wings had been off for two days while the Lightning had played the night before, the start disappointed.

The Wings had almost nothing going offensively, needing more than 5 minutes before Justin Abdelkader registered the team's first shot on goal, during a power play. The most energized the Wings looked was when Athanasiou and Adam Erne fought near the end, with Athanasiou handling himself well and landing a few good punches. The Wings had just four shots on Andrei Vasilevskiy after 20 minutes, while Mrazek had made eight saves.

Drew Miller came out from behind the net and angled a shot on Vasilevskiy to open the second period. Mantha joined the fight crew when he went after Greg McKegg after he'd rubbed out Larkin. Mantha won the fight, though he raised eyebrows when he landed a couple punches after McKegg was down, but the Lightning got a power play as Mantha was hit with an instigator penalty. Nosek served the instigator penalty and created a scoring chance as he bolted from the penalty box, stealing the puck and rushing in to send a short wrist shot on net.

Tomas Tatar tried to make a dent with a shot from the right circle during the second power play, using Riley Sheahan as a screen. Zetterberg finally succeeded at 8:03, taking a backhand pass from Nyquist and firing a shot that appeared to hit Brayden Point on the way into the net.

Mrazek stoned Yanni Gourde when he got a sudden breakaway. The Wings had two more power plays in the second period, the latter with 4 minutes to play. Nyquist created a chance when he took the puck to the net but Vasilevskiy was there for the save, part of 18 he made in the second period.
