Reckless kids using Perth car park for skateboarding

Fears have been raised that Perth youths are dicing with death after a group was spotted using a busy city centre car park as a skate park.

On Friday, July 26, youngsters were seen using the ramps in Canal Street car park for skateboarding.

The youths were even taking videos on their phones of their reckless behaviour. The youngsters have now been criticised for putting themselves and others in danger.

A driver who spotted the incident told the PA: “There were around six or seven of them.

“I was driving past one of the ramps and all of a sudden a young boy aged about 12 came flying out behind me just after I passed.

“There was a few of them all laughing and taking videos or photos on their phones.

“If I had been a few seconds later, or he had been a few seconds earlier, he would have been crushed under my wheels.

“It was pretty stupid.

“They then came down the final ramp before heading towards South Street.

“They were probably filming it to show off to their friends and wanted to be as close to the cars as possible.

“Even when I said to them how dangerous it was, they didn’t seem particularly bothered.

“They were just laughing and egging each other on.”

Police Scotland’s Tayside division is now asking for witnesses to this or similar incidents to get in touch with them.

A spokesperson for the division said: “On this occasion the youths were moved on prior to police arrival, however we do not condone this type of activity in car parks.

“Those involved are putting themselves and others at risk.

“Anyone who witnesses incidents of this nature should contact Police Scotland on 101.”

Cllr Peter Barrett, who represents the city centre at Perth and Kinross Council, also said: “The Canal Street car park is staffed by a security guard 24/7.

“There is comprehensive CCTV cover for the car park which would have alerted the security guard to the presence of the skateboarders.

“I am glad that they were moved on before the police attended and that the risk of an accident or collision was averted. Skateboarding on the vehicle ramps is just daft as well as plainly dangerous.”
