Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund LIVE!
Real Madrid just about beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 as they progressed into the semi-finals of the Club World Cup. In a fairly dull affair for the most part at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, it was Xabi Alonso’s side who took the lead inside ten minutes, when Gonzalo Garcia knocked home an Arda Guler cross.
His namesake Fran Garcia was on hand to double the advantage with well-taken finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cut-back, and it seemed as though Real were cruising through, until injury time madness unfolded.
Substitute Max Beier scored for Dortmund to halve the deficit late on, before Kylian Mbappe netted a spectacular scissor kick to surely put the game to bed. That wasn’t the case, as Dean Huijsen was dismissed for hauling back Serhou Guirassy, whose penalty made it interesting once more. Thibaut Courtois won it at the death for Real, as he saved Marcel Sabitzer’s effort from point-blank range.

Kick off

The players are out!
20:54 , Oli GentHere they come, with kick off coming up shortly...
Dortmund's set-up
20:44 , Oli GentAs for Dortmund, it’s looking like a 3-5-2 set up to hit their opponents on the counter.
They’ve got the big and little partnership up top with Guirassy and Adeyemi, with the former the out and out target man and the latter having the pace that can exploit space in behind.
Picking the front two will be important, and that’s why Julian Brandt is in the side, to slide those through balls into the forwards and link play between midfield and attack while Pascal Gross and Marcel Sabitzer pinch the ball back and play the shorter passes to get moves going.
At the back, it could be a case of a back five when out of possession, with Ryerson and Svensson both dropping in to limit the space that Real have to operate.
Sule and Bensebaini, however, are experienced as full-backs, and can support attacks from their wide centre-back berths. Don’t be expecting Chris Wilder-style overlaps, but both will drop into those pockets of space to deliver balls from deep if they get the chance, and Guirassy needs the service.
Tactical observations
20:32 , Oli GentIt’s looking like a 4-3-3 up against a 3-5-2.
Both managers - Alonso and Kovac - have thrived in the Bundesliga playing back threes, but it appears that Alonso has altered his approach somewhat to fit in with Madrid’s long-lasting principles of playing a 4-3-3.
As such, it’ll be a case of getting the full-backs involved to support attacks, with Alexander-Arnold inverting, inhabiting the space that Valverde leaves behind when he bombs on.
Fran Garcia will look to keep the width a bit more down the left, and get round Vinicius Junior, who will look to cut inside at every opportunity.
Jude Bellingham’s role will be that of an all-action battler, combined with the usual box-crashing that we have become so used to seeing.
Biggest absentees
20:15 , Oli GentThere are a few big-name absentees this evening.
The first is Jamie Gittens, who today completed his move to Chelsea from Dortmund for, as Standard Sport understands, £55million including add-ons.
The next for Dortmund is Jobe Bellingham, who accured too many bookings and is therefore suspended to face his brother Jude.
The final one is Mbappe, although he could feature off the bench, like he did against Juventus. He recovered from a fever to make his return to action last time out. Will he have the last laugh tonight?

Borussia Dortmund team news

Real Madrid team news
18:56 , Oli GentKylian Mbappe could be in line for his first start of the Club World Cup after he came on as a substitute against Juventus.
