Real Madrid veteran Luka Modric angry over lack of minutes

Real Madrid basketball

Real Madrid veteran Luka Modric has reportedly expressed his frustration with head coach Carlo Ancelotti over his lack of playing time in the current 2023/2024 season, as reported by El Chiringuito. Modric, who is now 38 years old, signed a contract extension last year with the understanding that he would receive reduced minutes due to his age and the emergence of young midfielders in the squad, including Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Eduardo Camavinga.

Recently, Ancelotti has faced questions about why Modric has not even been given the opportunity to warm up in some matches. In response, Ancelotti acknowledged the unique situation with an experienced player like Modric, stating, 'A youngster like [Arda] Guler, if he warms up and doesn't play, nothing happens; but Modric, at 39 years old, with five Champions League titles and being a legend... I can't do it. He knows that.'

With Modric's contract set to expire on June 30, both the player and Real Madrid need to make a decision about his future. Ancelotti recently commented, 'Whatever he decides, it will be fine,' which suggests that the Croatian may not renew his contract. According to Cadena SER, Modric has already made up his mind and is unlikely to extend his stay at the club.

Further reports indicate that Modric is deeply unhappy with his coach regarding his lack of playing time in recent matches. Eduardo Inda, the director of OK Diario, revealed on El Chiringuito that Modric feels deceived, stating, 'He has told Carlo Ancelotti, with good words because he is polite, that he has been deceived. Ancelotti didn't tell him that he was going to start, but that he was counting on him to play, although he didn't guarantee him a place in the starting lineup.'

Inda suggests that Modric's dissatisfaction has been building for several months, as he currently finds himself as the 15th or 16th player in the squad. The intention seems to be for Real Madrid not to renew Modric's contract and for him to depart this summer. Inda further adds that Modric might consider a move to Saudi Arabia, where he could potentially earn a significant amount of money. Ivan Rakitic, Modric's compatriot, has already made a similar move to the Pro League in Saudi Arabia.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Real Madrid and Luka Modric will navigate the upcoming decision regarding his future. Despite the reported frustration, Modric's illustrious career and contributions to the club cannot be overlooked. Whatever path he chooses, his legacy at Real Madrid will undoubtedly endure.
