Real Madrid's Vinícius Júnior appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for education advocacy

Real Madrid Basketball

Real Madrid's star player, Vinícius Júnior, has been appointed as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for his commendable charity work in Brazil. The United Nations agency responsible for promoting peace, development, and human rights recognized Vinícius' efforts through his Vini Jr Institute, which has been devoted to providing education and equal opportunities to disadvantaged children in Brazil since 2021.

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, visited Real Madrid's training ground for a special ceremony to formally convey the honorary position to the young forward. Azoulay praised Vinícius as not only an exceptional football player but also a committed advocate for education in Brazil from a very young age. She expressed her honor in having Vinícius join the UNESCO family as one of their Goodwill Ambassadors.

Vinícius Júnior, at just 23 years old, expressed his gratitude and excitement for being appointed as a UNESCO Ambassador. He sees it as a significant victory and a lifelong responsibility. While he aspires to be remembered as a great player, Vinícius also hopes to leave a lasting legacy as a caring citizen who made a difference in the world. His dedication to education began at the age of 19 when he started fighting for equal opportunities, and his Vini Jr Institute has seen steady growth in Brazil.

Through the Institute, Vinícius aims to provide access to education for children and teenagers in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Brazil. To incentivize their academic pursuits, sports are integrated into the program. By combining education and sports, Vinícius believes that these children can be empowered to continue their studies and strive for a brighter future.

It is worth noting that Vinícius Júnior has not only championed education but also taken a firm stance against racism. Unfortunately, he has endured racist abuse from opposition fans during his time playing for Real Madrid. In response, he launched an anti-racism campaign in Brazil in November 2021, ensuring that his platform is used to fight against discrimination and promote equality.

Last year, Vinícius was recognized for his humanitarian work in Brazil when he received the prestigious Ballon d'Or Socrates Award. Now, his appointment as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador marks the second time a Brazilian footballer has been given this honorable title, the first being the late Pelé, who was named a Goodwill Ambassador by UNESCO.

Vinícius Júnior's appointment as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador amplifies his impact and further solidifies his position as a role model for the younger generation. Through his dedication to education and his stance against racism, he is set to create a lasting global influence. With the support of UNESCO, Vinícius aims to make a profound impact worldwide and continue his mission of providing equal opportunities through education for underprivileged children.
