Readers praise 'brilliant' Barbour for supplying PPE to NHS staff fighting coronavirus

Barbour has been praised for producing and supplying PPE to NHS workers fighting coronavirus.

The first gowns made by the South Shields firm have arrived at Covid-19 hit North East hospitals where they were "gratefully received".

It is hoped the PPE will help keep NHS staff safe, amid concerns over shortages of protective clothing nationally.

Barbour usually produces high-end outdoor wear. However, its production pivot during the crisis has drawn widespread praise on social media.

Brilliant - well done Barbour," wrote Gillian Gudstar on LinkedIn.

"I think it is easy to underestimate just how much the clothing industry contributes to the economy of this country - and to have them turn their expertise to things we need rather than want is tremendous. "

During both world wars, Barbour's factory was used to make military garments.

And the company's latest effort made LinkedIn user Paul Frazer "feel proud to be British".

He added: I feel like singing Rule Britannia!"

There are grave concerns over the UK's short-term economic future due to the virus, which to date has killed over 12,000 British people.

However, once the crisis is over, some have called for shoppers to support Barbour as a thank you for their efforts during the crisis.

Tim Aston added: I will continue to wear your clothing with pride and continue to buy your clothing."

Initially the PPE was delivered to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, the first UK hospital to treat coronavirus patients. It will now increase production to include other North East hospitals.

Company chairman Dame Margaret Barbour said: “Everyone has a role to play in fighting Covid-19 and I wanted my daughter Helen and I to play our part by turning our South Shields factory over to produce PPE product for the NHS.

“Our staff’s welfare is our most important priority and we have undertaken a strict risk assessment to ensure we adhere to social distancing and that they are fully protected whilst undertaking this important role.

"I am very grateful to my staff for their overwhelming support.”

It appears NHS staff are grateful to the firm, with Dawn York posting on Facebook: "Proud that Barbour are doing this. I'm working on the frontline as a nurse at the QE. Then my husband is making our gowns for us. So we are doing our part for our country ."
