Do you have a favourite room that inspires you whenever you look out of its windows? Perhaps you have a perfect place where you can daydream and watch the world go by at your leisure?

Usually my PhD means long hours in my department library. But sometimes it means long days in Naples, visiting the Museo Archeologico Nazionale to handle the objects that I study, and writing to the sound of Neapolitan street life through open windows Photograph: ruthmallen/GuardianWitness
