People in Arnold have welcomed council proposals to buy new homes for people in urgent need of accommodation.
Gedling Borough Council has agreed a budget of more than £1m to buy houses in Gedling, Arnold and Carlton for families and individuals seeking temporary housing under the authority's homelessness commitment.
The council has recently made an offer for a house in Sherbrook Road, in Arnold.
Locals have spoken out in favour of the scheme, saying they would welcome anybody in need of a home into the neighbourhood.
Sherbrook Road resident Lee Stevenson, 53, who works as a civil servant, said: "There aren't that many places available to people in need.
"As long as people look after the area it is not an issue for me.
"Don't get me wrong, I agree with people getting homes if they need it but they're difficult to find for lots of people.
"To me I am not bothered as long as they don't cause any grief."
Nurse Keisha Reid, 35, of Sherbrook Road, added: "People need homes and I can't imagine any trouble coming from it.
"It is definitely something that I would support."
The budget set by the council is to buy eight homes.
Councillor Henry Wheeler, the borough council's portfolio holder for housing, health and wellbeing, said: “We have a legal duty to support those who present themselves to the council as homeless and we have a fantastic Housing Options team here who help countless residents, some of whom are in incredibly challenging situations.
"The process of getting someone into temporary accommodation is not always straight forward, and so to improve the service we offer, we’ve agreed budget of £1.1m to buy eight homes across the borough which will be used for emergency, temporary accommodation for families and people in need.
"We are looking at houses in urban areas, with nearby amenities such as transport links and we are making offers on suitable properties, but have not yet completed any purchases.
"When we move someone into temporary accommodation, appropriate locations and facilitates are not always available right away and it can be costly for long stays in hotels or B&Bs.
"By purchasing our own housing, we will be able to ensure that we always have emergency availability and can offer, suitable accommodation, to those in need, fulfilling our ethos of serving people, improving lives.”
