RB Leipzig make Timo Werner promise ahead of £47.5m Chelsea transfer

Timo Werner has played in his final home game for RB Leipzig.

It was confirmed last week that the Germany international has agreed to join Chelsea in the summer transfer window after his £47.5m release clause was activated before the June 15 expiry date.

And the 24-year-old had a special message for his soon-to-be former club as well as his future employers when his move to the Premier League was officially announced.

"I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club," Werner said. "I, of course, want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years.

"You will forever be in my heart.

"I look forward to next season with my new teammates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans.

"Together we have a very successful future ahead of us."

With Werner set to become a Chelsea player on July 1, it means he will play no part of Leipzig's Champions League campaign when the competition resumes in August.

Therefore, Saturday's 2-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund turned out to be his final home game for the Bundesliga outfit and he was presented with a specially-commissioned mosaic ahead of kick-off.

But Werner wasn't the only player bidding farewell to the Red Bull Arena at the weekend.

As seen in the image above, Ethan Ampadu - whose loan spell ends next week - was also presented with a specially-commissioned mosaic before kick-off.

This prompted one Chelsea fan to respond to the tweet by asking: "Admin are you going to watch Chelsea when Werner plays?"

To which the RB Leipzig Twitter account responded with this promise: "For sure!"

Ahead of Chelsea's 2-1 win over Aston Villa, head coach Frank Lampard gave his verdict on Werner's imminent arrival.

"I think he's clearly a player that we liked," he told reporters. "I've certainly followed him for a long time myself, individually just as a talented player, even before I had this job.

"But as a club, clearly we went for him, and he certainly will strengthen us in my opinion.

"He's got huge talent, had a fantastic season this year but before that as well.

"Where we probably couldn't do as much business in the last couple of windows for whatever reasons, it's given us a chance to see some youth have more time in the team.

"But we were very clear about the fact we wanted to improve. And Timo Werner is always a signing that will improve us.

"I'm certainly very excited to have him playing for Chelsea. And we look forward to having him."
