RB Leipzig handed Ethan Ampadu fitness boost as Chelsea defender makes training return

RB Leipzig have been handed a major boost ahead of the Bundesliga run-in with the news that on-loan Chelsea centre-back is working his way back to full fitness after a lengthy injury lay-off.

The Welshman, who joined the German outfit on loan for the season last summer, has been out of action since early March with a back injury.

Ampadu had been unable to train since the Bundesliga made its return from the coronavirus shutdown last month, but he is now stepping up his fitness levels ahead of aiming to force himself back into the plans of Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann.

Chelsea Q&A with Oliver Harbord

Today, Leipzig have posted photographs of their training session on their Twitter page and have confirmed Ampadu's return, which will be a big boost to Leipzig ahead of their five remaining league matches this season, as well as their hopes of continuing their UEFA Champions League adventure.

At the time of writing, though, no details have yet been confirmed on whether or not the competition will be allowed to continue or not.

Even if Ampadu does work his way back to full fitness ahead of the season reaching its conclusion, the 19-year-old, who joined Chelsea from League Two club Exeter City back in 2017, will have a tough job on his hands to force his way back into the Leipzig starting line-up, with Arsenal transfer target Dayot Upamecano, Nordi Mukiele and Ibrahima Konate ahead of him in the pecking order.

Leipzig, who climbed to third in the Bundesliga table earlier this week with a thrilling 4-2 away victory over FC Koln, still have ambitions to track down second-placed Borussia Dortmund in the fixtures that remain this season, meaning manager Nagelsmann could need to call upon all the members of his squad at any given moment.

Since joining Leipzig last summer, Ampadu, who will celebrate his 20th birthday in September, has made just seven appearances in all competitions.
