RB Leipzig get brutal pre Rangers snub as Bundesliga fans give 'advertising project' the cold shoulder

German clubs are turning their back on RB Leipzig as the Saxony side prepare for their Europa League clash with Rangers.

Leipzig are much maligned in Germany having only formed in 2009 after Red Bull took over fifth-tier side SSV Markranstadt.

Their lack of history and tradition is a source of disgust to many and their recent success has been met with high-profile protests.

Leipzig join fellow Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League last four but while Eintracht have been swamped with good luck messages, it's been the opposite for Leipzig who have been given the cold shoulder.

Last night's opponents Borussia Monchengladbach organised a 19-minute silence from their fans at the start of the game to indicate they were formed in 1900 and not 2009 like RB Leipzig.

Union Berlin fans did the same last week with the bizarre spectacle of supporters not making any noise for the first part of the match before all their fans started singing when the clock turned to the 20th minute.

Borussia Monchengladbach supporters club stated: "In our view, this protest against the advertising project from Saxony is correct and very important. RB Leipzig's behaviour can never be allowed to be normal.

"The current financial problems caused by the pandemic will further promote the unfair competitive advantage of such clubs.”

And German Cup Final opponents Freiburg have refused permission to use their club badge with RB Leipzig's for joint advertising for the showpiece final in Berlin later this month.

A Freiburg statement said: "We have listened to our supporters and they do not want to be associated with RB Leipzig in any joint project.

"Therefore our logo cannot be used to promote the DFB Pokal."
