RB Leipzig dealt major Celtic blow as captain suffers 'serious knee injury' ahead of Parkhead trip

RB Leipzig have been dealt a hammer blow ahead of their trip to Celtic Park next week as captain Peter Gulacsi faces a race to play again this season.

The Hungarian goalkeeper went down in agony during the first half of the Hoops' Champions League Group F clash with the Bundesliga club on Wednesday night. He was stretchered off the pitch in clear distress and now his club have confirmed that he has torn his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. It's the injury all football players dread as he is now likely to miss the vast majority of what remains this term.

Leipzig said in a statement: "Péter Gulácsi suffered a serious knee injury in the 10th minute of our UEFA Champions League game against Celtic. Our captain sustained an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his right knee and will be out for a lengthy period of time. Further examinations will follow in the coming days."

Without their leader, Marco Rose's side still managed to triumph, winning 3-1 against Ange Postecoglou's team on matchday three.

Christopher Nkunku put them ahead but Jota provided hope for Celtic with a leveller. Andre Silva then struck twice to ensure the three points remained in Germany.

Postecoglou's men are bottom of the section that also involves Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk, but could go above Leipzig with a win in Glasgow next week.
