Rawan Hussain missing: Emergency services searching woods for teenage girl

Police officers are combing a woodland area in north Leeds as they search desperately for a missing teenager.

West Yorkshire Police say the disappearance of Rawan Hussain, 16, is "out of character."

The teen was last seen at her house in the suburb of Chapel Allerton, at around 5am on Sunday, April 26.

She was reported missing around six hours after the last sighting.

Police officers, paramedics, firefighters and members of Mountain Rescue have been combing Gledhow Valley Woods today, reports Leeds Live.

A National Police Air Service crew and mounted officers also joined the search this afternoon.

Officers have also been knocking on doors in Chapel Allerton and asking people if they have seen the teenager.

In a statement, the force said: “Police are currently searching a scene in Gledhow Valley Woods in Leeds in connection with missing teenager Rawan Hussain.

“Rawan, aged 16, from Chapel Allerton, was reported missing at 1pm yesterday after last being seen at her home at about 5am that day.

“Officers are continuing to appeal for anyone who has seen her or who has any information that could assist in tracing her.”

The force described Rawan as an Asian girl, of medium build, with curly, dark brown hair.

She could be wearing a headscarf, black coat and Nike trainers.

Chief Inspector Richard Padwell, of Leeds District, said “It is out of character for Rawan to go missing like this and we are very concerned for her welfare.

“Her family are understandably upset and we are doing everything we can to support them as we continue with our efforts to find her.

We would like to hear from anyone who has seen her or anyone fitting her description in the area or elsewhere at any point since she was last seen.

“We continuing to carry out searches of Gledhow Valley Woods as part of this missing person investigation. We appreciate that this activity may cause understandable concern in the community and we are liaising closely with the local neighbourhood policing team to reassure the community and keep people updated.”

Jean Fletcher, 70, who lives opposite the park, said earlier today that emergency services started arriving at the scene at around 8pm yesterday.

She said: "There was just tape around the corner and a couple of policemen and one coming to the door.

"I’d heard a helicopter around before that but with all that’s going on with coronavirus I didn’t think anything about it.

Jean said the police were knocking on doors to ask residents if they had seen Rawan Hussain.

“They just asked me if I’d seen her and if I did, to let them know.

Jean has lived in the area 43 years and said she has never seen anything like this.

She added: “I hope they find her safe. It’s so sad.”

If you see Rawan or have any information about her whereabouts, contact police on 101 and quote log number 905 of April 26.
