Ravens sign punter Sean Smith after Kaare Vedvik trade

The Baltimore Ravens had an open spot on their roster following the trade of kicker/punter Kaare Vedvik to the Minnesota Vikings over the weekend. To fill the spot, Baltimore added another camp leg, signing punter Sean Smith, according to the team.

Smith had previously been invited to minicamp as an undrafted free agent from the University of Dayton. There’s little chance Smith makes Baltimore’s 53-man roster given that the Ravens have one of the best punters in the league in Sam Koch. However, given the need around the league for good kickers and punters and Baltimore’s recent trade of Vedvik, there’s some wisdom in adding another leg to the 90-man roster right now.

The Ravens have had great success finding kickers and punters over the team’s history. Baltimore has had three primary punters over their 23 seasons in the league — Koch, Dave Zastudil and Kyle Richardson. As for kickers, the Ravens have been able to find and develop some of the better kickers in the league. Stephen Hauschka, Graham Gano, Billy Cundiff, Shayne Graham, Robbie Gould and Wil Lutz have all found success after spending time in Baltimore.

Smith comes to the Ravens with a 42-yard average on 199 punts, including a 45.8-yard average in 2018.
