Ravens sign 3 players to the practice squad, release Dontay Demus Jr.

The Ravens announced four practice squad moves, signing tight end Eric Tomlinson, cornerback Tre Swilling, and veteran safety DeAndre Houston-Carson.

Baltimore released wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr. from the practice squad in a subsequent move.

Swilling went undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2022 and signed with the Tennessee Titans before spending time on the practice squads of the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers, respectively. He made the 49ers’ practice squad this summer and was elevated to the active roster for two games this season.

Swilling is the son of former NFL linebacker Pat Swilling, who is in the College Football Hall of Fame (Georgia Tech), was the 1991 NFL Defensive Player of the Year with the New Orleans Saints and was a five-time Pro Bowler over his 12-year career.

Houston-Carson signed with the Ravens on Aug. 14 in the middle of training camp but didn’t make the 53-man roster or initial practice squad. He’s a versatile defensive back in his eighth NFL season and started a career-high six games last year with the Bears.

Tomlinson spent part of the 2020 season and all of 2021 with the Ravens, starting nine games across those two seasons, carving a niche as a strong blocking tight end. Tomlinson signed a one-year deal with the Broncos last offseason, then signed to the Texans this offseason before being released on Aug. 29.

Tomlinson could assume the role of a primary blocking tight end this season after Josh Oliver left in free agency and they didn’t bring back Nick Boyle.

Demus is a University of Maryland product who was undrafted in April, but he has come back from a major knee/leg injury suffered in 2021. He flashed in the final preseason game, catching two passes for 86 yards, including a spectacular grab between two defenders.
