Ravenhill Road: Calls for improvement at Belfast junction where schoolgirl was knocked down

There has been a call for an improved crossing point at a busy South Belfast junction.

South Belfast SDLP councillor Seamas De Faoite has called on the infrastructure minister to introduce a Puffin crossing at the Ardenlee Avenue, Ravenhill Road junction in an effort to improve safety for local residents.

He said that the junction is used by a large number of pedestrians and cyclists every day who are in need of protection.

Councillor De Faoite highlighted one "traumatic" incident where a schoolgirl suffered a broken leg after being knocked down walking home from school.

The councillor has written to the minister saying that the Ravenhill Road has been included in the Belfast Cycle Network Delivery Plan and asked if there is a timeline in place for the design and implementation of the new crossing.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Councillor De Faoite said: "This is one of the busiest junctions along the Ravenhill Road, with a dire need to protect the large number of pedestrians and cyclists who cross here every day.

"There have already been a number of traumatic incidents at this junction, including one where local residents came to the assistance of a young girl who was knocked down and broke her leg walking home from school.

"The Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd should ensure that a new signalised crossing is included here as a safety minimum as he rolls out the ambitious Belfast Cycle Network."

The Department for Infrastructure has been contacted for comment.
