Rats running through Liverpool street as residents tell their 'horror stories'

There are claims one Liverpool street is dealing with a vermin problem after a video emerged showing a large rat climbing over a wheelie bin.

The video, filmed earlier this month, showed a large rat on top of a purple wheelie bin on Chapel Gardens in Everton. Now Kevin Robinson-Hale, who is standing as a Green Party candidate in next year's local government elections, has claimed there is a particular issue with rats in the area.

Mr Robinson-Hale said, who lives in the Everton area, said: " The rat situation in the Everton area is now a major issue. I have heard several horror stories from residents over recent weeks. One man said he saw a group of up to 15 rats running around his neighbour's garden."

The Everton West candidate added: "I have complained to Liverpool City Council who have informed me that sewer baiting has taken place. I have been complaining for several months now and we need to find a long term, viable solution."

A spokesman for Liverpool City Council said that the city's pest control team had recently been laying bait in the Everton area. The spokesman said that the city baits between 600 and 700 streets per year and that rat sightings were higher than usual due to the unseasonably mild weather.

The spokesman said that the council had seen a steady decline in vermin reporting as the impact of gated alleyways and euro bins have negated much of the issue.
