The European Union has granted geographical indication (GI) status to Ratchaburi fragrant coconuts, opening new opportunities across a market of more than 450 million consumers.
The European Commission formally presented the GI certificate on Friday during Thaifex-Anuga Asia 2026 at Impact Muang Thong Thani, following the product's registration in the EU on Feb 18.
Speaking at the ceremony, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen praised the coconut's distinctive qualities, including its pandan-like aroma and natural sweetness.
He credited the fertile Mae Klong River basin, local climate conditions and generations of farming expertise in Ratchaburi.
Vice Commerce Minister Kirida Bhaopichitr said the recognition makes the coconut the fifth Thai GI product registered in the EU, strengthening the international profile of Thailand's agricultural products and providing producers with enhanced protection and market access across the bloc's 27 member states.
"The registration is not the final destination. It is a platform to create real economic value through market development, stronger supply chains, connections with buyers and the sustainable positioning of Thai GI products in premium EU markets," she said.
The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) deputy director-general Wirote Chongkolwanichsuk said it plans to continue pursuing overseas GI registrations to create additional export opportunities and increase income for farming communities.
He said the latest registration would enable coconut growers and producers to benefit more fully from the GI system while showcasing Thailand's agricultural heritage on the global stage.
The certificate was presented to representatives of Ratchaburi coconut producers, including Narongsak Chuensuchon, chair of the Ratchaburi Chapter of the Federation of Thai Industries.
Thailand has 11 GI products registered overseas in 33 countries.
Within the EU, registered Thai GI products now include Thung Kula Rong Hai fragrant rice, Doi Tung coffee, Doi Chang coffee, Phatthalung Sangyod rice and Ratchaburi fragrant coconut, the DIP says.
