Rare green sea turtle rescued in Sunderbans

KOLKATA: A green sea turtle was rescued from the Sunderbans on Sunday. Considered endangered on IUCN Red list, its sighting here is reportedly very rare as they are mainly found in Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

DFO of South 24 Parganas, Milan Mondal, said the juvenile turtle was rescued from Taldi by Matla range staff. “It has been kept under medical supervision at Sunderbans Wild Animal Park in Jharkhali. It will be released near the sea,” added Mondal.

Green sea turtle is also known as the black (sea) turtle or Pacific green turtle. The common name refers to the usually green fat beneath its carapace.

Shailendra Singh, head of India programme at Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA), said: “It’s found in the Indian Ocean, too, and its sighting here is considered to be rare.”
