Raphael Varane's comments on Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Man Utd team-mates

Raphael Varane has spoken about his new Manchester United team-mates after signing for the club from Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year deal and has cost the Red Devils an initial £34million.

A four-time Champions League and one-time World Cup winner, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping that Varane brings his elite pedigree to Old Trafford as they bid to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Following a fortnight's wait for confirmation, the France international was finally unveiled to his new supporters on Saturday, strutting out onto the pitch and receiving rousing reception before United smashed Leeds 5-1 in their opening game.

Varane watched the likes of Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw dismantle the Peacocks in the scintillating performance.

The defender knows Pogba well from their time representing France, and is looking forward to reuniting with him in Manchester.

Varane told his new club's website : "I think Paul is very positive and he has a very good energy; he motivates players in the dressing room and on the pitch with his energy.

"We are different but we are very complementary, and it’s important in the team to have different types of leaders and characters."

On playing with him at club level, the Frenchman said: "I’m very happy. I’ve known him for a very long time, we started together with the French national team and he’s a great player.

"I think he’s ambitious and me too, so we are ready to work hard and to do all we can to win trophies."

Varane will need to get to know his team-mates in the back line, however, such as captain and expected centre-back partner Harry Maguire, as well as left-back Luke Shaw.

Discussing the duo, who impressed for England at Euro 2020, the former Madrid man had nothing but praise and knows that they will be hungry to get over their summer heartache.

"I think they are very good players and I’m very happy to be a new player in this team because there is a lot of talent.

"I’m sure when you don’t win a trophy and you lost in a final then the next time you are more motivated and you want to win more than ever."

Varane also revealed what Solskjaer spoke to him about ahead of signing.

"It was very important for me to know exactly about the philosophy and what the challenges and objectives are, and the ambitions – that was very important for me," he added.

"And I feel a real determination and an ambition to work very hard and to try to do everything that is possible to win trophies. That motivates me."
