As we look toward the 2023 regular season, we count down the most important players for the Washington Commanders ahead of training camp. On Wednesday, No. 3 was defensive end Jonathan Allen.
We continue our countdown today with No. 2, wide receiver Terry McLaurin.
We almost made McLaurin No. 1. His value far surpasses just being the team’s No. 1 wide receiver. McLaurin consistently sees doubles teams, plays with average or below quarterbacks and still produces as one of the NFL’s best wide receivers.
Additionally, McLaurin is the emotional leader for Washington’s offense, much like Jonathan Allen on defense. McLaurin does everything right. He practices hard. He never complains. He sets an example for his younger teammates. And everyone in the organization trusts him. It’s no coincidence that management always turns to McLaurin and Allen to represent the current team.
The Commanders have improved the wide receiver position over the last two years. Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson combine with McLaurin to give the Commanders one of the NFC’s top trios. Dotson himself looks like a future star.
But make no mistake, Washington cannot lose McLaurin. Quarterback Sam Howell would feel the loss of McLaurin more so than any other player on the team. McLaurin can be the possession receiver, go across the middle for a tough first down, or beat you deep. It’s that type of versatility that makes him one of the best.
Losing McLaurin for any period of time would be a difficult blow on the field — and off.
