Ranking Aaron Rodgers possible AFC trade destinations (or staying with the Packers)

An offseason full of Aaron Rodgers rumors and attempts to read the tea leaves about what he wants to do? Gee, when have we seen THAT before?

Oh. You mean the last two offseasons, when he seemed pretty unhappy or when it seemed certain he was leaving the Green Bay Packers.

Yet here we are, in slightly different circumstances. There’s the uncertainty about whether he actually wants to be traded out of the only NFL franchise he’s called home, especially after he talked on Tuesday about maybe reworking his very expensive contract for next year to help out the Packers.

But then there’s the report that IF the Packers trade him, they’d want to deal him to the AFC. Plus, Peter King guessed it would cost at least two first-rounders to get Rodgers.

So let’s throw in our two cents and rank the possible Rodgers destinations (or staying in Green Bay):

They have Josh Allen. End of discussion.

Kansas City Chiefs

The have Patrick Mahomes. Same.

Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow yadda yadda yadda. You get the picture.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Nope. See above.

Los Angeles Chargers

I think they’re extremely pleased with Justin Herbert, and they should be.

Cleveland Browns

They’ve already spent a ton of money on a QB.

Houston Texans

Rebuilding teams like this don’t trade for QBs that can cost a ton in future assets AND take up a lot of room on their salary cap.

Denver Broncos

If only the Broncos didn’t just trade AND spend a ton for this guy.

Baltimore Ravens

This would be intriguing if the Ravens didn’t make it clear they wanted to retain Lamar Jackson this offseason (although, yes, let’s take that with a giant grain of salt). But I don’t see them getting into the mix if Jackson signs elsewhere.

New England Patriots

Hmmm. That’s sort of been my reaction with other possible available quarterbacks and the Pats (see: Brady, Tom). I’ll lean no, but you just never know.

Indianapolis Colts

Jeff Saturday may not be the head coach next season, but I put him there as a reminder that this team has made some bad decisions as of late. And they might draft their QB of the future with the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft.

Pittsburgh Steelers

A question: Why don’t we talk about this team more as a possibility? Their defense is elite, their offense could use the help … why not them?

Tennessee Titans

Perpetually going to be talked about as a possibility for any big-name quarterback on the market.

Green Bay Packers

Better the devil you know etc etc. But it feels like the Packers are in a holding pattern of mediocrity even with a great defense this year. Maybe it’s best for both parties to break up. Still, staying in Green Bay isn’t the worst option.

Las Vegas Raiders

If only there was a former star teammate there who could convince him to reunite … oh! Right!

Miami Dolphins

I have no idea if they’d REALLY be contenders. We don’t even know how they feel about Tua Tagovailoa going into the offseason. What I do know is this is a team that’s already set up to be elite in the AFC, and Rodgers could be a huge addition.

New York Jets

It’s too perfect. The Jets are a pretty good team that needs a quarterback to go from also-ran to contender. They’d probably overpay to get Rodgers just to make the suffering fanbase happy. Let’s go.
