Rangers watch on as UEFA chief makes bleak Europa League confession

UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin admits this season's European competitions could be scrapped.

Rangers' Europa League last 16 clash with Bayer Leverkusen has been left in limbo by the coronavirus-enforced shutdown.

The Bundesliga side triumphed 3-1 at Ibrox in the first leg but the tournament has now been postponed indefinitely.

The Champions League has also been put on hold and Ceferin concedes play may not resume if restrictions on sporting events remain until September.

"We can't play it out in September or October," Ceferin told ZDF Sportstudio.

And when asked directly if the competitions could be abandoned, he admitted: “If the authorities do not allow us to play, then we cannot play."

The finals of both competitions were initially rescheduled for May but that idea was quickly shelved.

Ceferin remains adamant playing behind closed doors is preferable to no fixtures whatsoever, and stands by UEFA 's plan to continue the season in July or August.

He added: “The fact is that we really don’t know much.

“We are waiting for the development of this terrible situation in the world, and mainly in Europe.

"It is still better to play the game behind closed doors and have it on TV, which is what the people need and want because it brings positive energy to their homes, than not playing at all.

“That’s what the people want, that brings positive energy, and it will be July or August."

Meanwhile, Rangers could discover the fate of the domestic season this week, with SPFL bosses set to hold a series of conference calls on how to conclude the campaign.
