Rangers shut down Andrew Cashner after another setback

SURPRISE, Ariz. _ The Rangers on Thursday halted right-hander Andrew Cashner's throwing program for the second time in less than two weeks after renewed problems with soreness in the right biceps.

Cashner on Monday resumed throwing after a four-day break. Rangers assistant general manager Mike Daly said Cashner encountered another setback and will not throw for several days. The club will consult with team physician Dr. Keith Meister on the next step for Cashner.

"We tried to ramp him up, and it didn't respond," Daly said. "We need to get more information on what the next steps are.

"It pushes back his time frame. It's a little bit of a concern here as we get into March."

Managed Jeff Banister admitted "time for Cashner is relevant now" in terms of being ready for the start of the regular season. The Rangers could open the season with both off-season rotation additions _ right-hander Tyson Ross and Cashner _ on the disabled list.

"With the number of guys we have in camp that have been working in that starter role, we have some options if we need to go down that road," Banister said.

The options include right-hander Mike Hauschild, who has pitched well in two of his three appearances. The Rangers obtained him from Houston in December in the Rule 5 draft.

Cashner was on the disabled list twice last season with Miami and San Diego because of hamstring and neck injuries. He has been on the DL four times in the last four seasons.
