Rangers hero wins first trophy as a manager after replacing ex-Celtic boss

Kenny Miller has landed the first major trophy of his managerial career after guiding Maccabi Tel Aviv to Israel State Cup glory.

The former Rangers, Celtic and Scotland striker stepped into the role on an interim basis earlier this month following Ronny Deila’s leave of absence, and has now delivered silverware amid a turbulent backdrop at the club.

Miller enjoyed a decorated playing career, winning four league titles and multiple domestic cups, but this marks his first success in the dugout.

After brief early experience as Livingston player-manager in 2018, he built his coaching CV with spells in Australia, Falkirk and Huddersfield before linking up again with ex-Celtic boss Deila in MLS with Atlanta United.

The pair reunited at Maccabi Tel Aviv in January, but Deila was later stood down following off-field allegations, handing Miller his opportunity as interim boss.

Tel Aviv came from behind to beat Israeli champions Hapoel Be’er Sheva 2-1 in Tuesday night’s final, with second-half goals from Helio Varela and Roy Revivo sealing the comeback victory.

Ahead of the showpiece, Miller had made clear his desire to take the job on a permanent basis. He said: “I have made no secret that if the club offered me something here, I would love to stay on.

“I have really enjoyed my time here and the challenge of taking over as coach. But I fully accept it’s up to the club. They might have their own plans for the future. All I can do is try to win as many games as possible.

“We have a big game coming up and I know the players will give their all. I could not have asked any more of them since I took over.”

The cup triumph strengthens Miller’s case as he waits to discover whether he will be handed the role on a full-time basis.
