Rangers fans marched away from Ibrox by cops after hundreds gather for celebrations amid title win

Police have escorted hundreds of celebrating Rangers FC fans away from Ibrox Stadium after a massive crowd gathered for their 55th title celebrations.

Scores of supporters banged drums, waved flags and sang songs as they paraded down Paisley Road West on Sunday afternoon.

A heavy police presence was in attendance leading the large group down the road as traffic in the area was forced to a standstill.

Video footage from the scene showed the joyous fans continuing their celebrations however there was no social distancing involved.

Worryingly, very few fans were seen wearing masks after police previously issued a warning to Rangers fans not to gather in large crowds due to the ongoing pandemic.

Fans let off fireworks and smoke bombs within George Square and outside the Govan side’s ground after Celtic drew 0-0 with Dundee United.

Police Scotland have confirmed that a ‘small number’ of arrests have been made and fines handed out after groups gathered across the city.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow Division, said: “We are continuing to police the ongoing gatherings of football supporters in both George Square and outside Ibrox stadium today (Sunday, 7 March, 2021).

“Public safety remains our utmost priority and I would again remind fans that, in line with the current Scottish Government Coronavirus guidelines, all gatherings are currently restricted.

“Officers have made a small number of arrests and issued fixed penalty notices for breaches of the coronavirus restrictions, minor incidents of disorder and the use of pyrotechnic devices.

“We will continue with an appropriate policing response, as officers engage with those present, explain and encourage them to comply with the restrictions.

“Where appropriate, we have moved to enforcement and will continue to do so.”
