Gary McAllister has spoken for the first time about the shocking street assault which saw him rushed to hospital after a night out in Leeds.

The Rangers assistant and his wife were set upon in an unprovoked attack after spending the day south of the border watching Steven Gerrard in action for Liverpool Legends.

McAllister was reportedly punched in the face and missed the Ibrox club's trip to face rivals Celtic the following week as he continued his recovery from the harrowing incident at home.

He was back alongside Gerrard and the Rangers management team for wins over Hearts and Motherwell in the last six days.

And, speaking to talkSPORT, McAllister revealed his shock at the attack as well as thanking the flood of wellwishers from across football.

The Scotland and Liverpool legend said: "It was a shock to the system as you can imagine.

"But I'm full on the mend and it's nice to be back on the bench alongside everyone at Rangers.

"The club were brilliant so to be back on the sidelines against Hearts and Motherwell for two victories was good.

"What I would like to say, at times football gets a bad rep but it's been quite humbling the support from everybody in football. I have had lots of messages and I can't thank people enough.
