Rangers and Celtic pundits react to penalty decisions and Ibrox title hopes

As the dust settles at Ibrox, the reaction to a dramatic derby clash is just getting started.

Rangers and Celtic played out a 2-2 draw on Monday with twists and turns aplenty. Ange Postecoglou's side led through Daizen Maeda before Ryan Kent smashed in a leveller and James Tavernier turned the fixture on its head from the penalty spot.

But it was Kyogo Furuhashi who had the final say, snatching a late equaliser to ensure the reigning champions retain their nine point advantage at the top of the Premiership. There were talking points aplenty, including a hotly-debated VAR incident, where Celtic were denied a penalty for a potential handball from Connor Goldson.

Here's a selection of pundit reaction from Sky Sports and BBC Sportsound.

James McFadden

“John Beaton, at the very least, should be asked to go and look at that. Normally, if your arms are outstretched in an unnatural position, making yourself bigger, but he puts his hands up towards the ball.

“People might say he’s protecting his face but it doesn’t matter, you’re not supposed to be doing that. He almost pushes the ball away.

“I think John Beaton should’ve been asked to go and look at that. Andy (Walker) and Ally (McCoist) were speaking about it in commentary, they don’t know why. I don’t know why either, he should be asked to go and look at it.

“I think he’s very fortunate, Connor Goldson.”

Stiliyan Petrov

“We’re always going to have these discussions, but what I would say is John Beaton should go and make a decision, just go and see it. You’re asking big players to go and perform and do the right things. The referee, it’s big game, go and look at it and make a big decision.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s Celtic or Rangers, go and have a look.”

Kris Boyd

“Coming into it, I said it was going to be very difficult for Rangers to overhaul Celtic. Could Rangers beat Celtic in a game? Yeah, they could, but Rangers’ problems have been elsewhere.

“Celtic seem to be steamrolling over the top of every other team in the Scottish Premiership. Rangers had four wins in a row coming into this but it always seems to be a grind, but for Celtic that doesn’t seem to be the case.

“If there was any hope for Rangers they had to win the game today. They haven’t and, for me, it’s over.

"(On Rangers' penalty award) I'm still not sure whether it's a penalty or not. I think (Fashion) Sakala stands on (Carl) Starfelt. I know he goes to ground and the rules are rules, but forget it, it's given. You've got to say, what a penalty kick it is. You stick it in the top corner."

Rory Loy

“There were some big talking points in terms of the handballs. I think they got them all right, to be honest.

“The one that stands out as ‘could’ve been given’ was the first one. I think there’s an argument to say that Connor Goldson, while his arms were tucked close to his body, he does move them towards the ball.

“However, given the nature of it, how close it was, and his arms were in, I would lean towards it not being a penalty. I don’t think there’s anything too contentious there at all.”

Neil McCann

“I think Rangers shaded it, but Michael Beale won’t be too unhappy. He said he was going to have a go and Rangers fans expect that at Ibrox, even against a really, really good Celtic side with a nine point gap.

“He’ll be relatively pleased, but when you get yourself ahead going into the latter stages of the match, you’re really looking to switch on and see the game out. It was a poor goal to give away, but Rangers have lots of positives to take from the game.

“Fashion Sakala was the best player for Rangers by some way. He was involved in the two goals, but his application levels were the difference for me. Maybe if a couple of other players had the same application levels, they could’ve seen the game out, but it wasn’t to be.”
