Rangers 2 Dundee United 0 as Malik Tillman magic amid Morelos missed chance - three things we learned

Rangers have cut the gap back on rivals Celtic to six points with a comfortable victory against a flailing Dundee United.

Michael Beale's side started strongly with James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos going close in the opening stages before Malik Tillman's claims for a penalty were duly dismissed after Todd Cantwell forced a save from the United keeper. The two linked up again as the ex-Norwich City man laid it off to the Bayern Munich loanee who fired in to the bottom to open the scoring. Ryan Kent then smashed the underside of the bar with a rocket of an effort to end the half.

In the second period, Tillman was the man again for Rangers when he latched on to a Tavernier pass and took his time to slide the ball under Mark Birighitti. The Light Blues played the game out with little threat from Jim Goodwin's side as they remained unbeaten in league action under Beale before a do-or-die derby next week.

McGregor in 500 club

Allan McGregor made Rangers history on Saturday as he made his 500th competitive appearance.

It puts the veteran in an elite club of the history of the Ibrox side.

And the 41-year-old marked it with a clean sheet much to his delight.

Will he do the same against Celtic next week?

Morelos missed chance?

Michael Beale put a vote of confidence in Alfredo Morelos, starting him over on-form Antonio Colak.

The Colombian could be close to playing his final few games for Rangers and missed an early chance against United.

Morelos then cut a frustrated figure at times at Ibrox as he couldn't hit the target.

That gives Beale a decision to make for the crucial trip to Celtic Park.

Magic Malik

Malik Tillman's chances of a permanent Rangers transfer have been boosted.

That was the word from Beale pre-match and the American made his mark on his return to action.

It was a cool finish to open the scoring and make it 15 goal involvements this season for Rangers.

The youngster continues to impress in light blue and could play a big role agains Celtic next week.
