Randy Waldrum Returns To Coach Super Falcons For Olympic Qualifiers

After a six-month hiatus, head coach Randy Waldrum has rejoined Nigeria's women's national team, the Super Falcons, following a contract extension. The details of the new contract have not been disclosed, but sources indicate it is for one year, covering the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations and the 2024 Olympic Games if the team qualifies.

Waldrum's return was delayed due to negotiations over his coaching staff, particularly his desire to have his former assistant Lauren Gregg on board. Despite initial disagreements, both parties eventually reached an agreement.

During Waldrum's absence, assistant coach Justin Madugu led the team to qualify for the WAFCON 2024 and advance to the penultimate round of the 2024 Olympic qualifiers, where they are set to face Cameroon.

The Super Falcons aim to secure a spot in the Olympics after a 16-year absence, with their last appearance dating back to Beijing 2008. Waldrum emphasized the importance of focusing on the upcoming matches against Cameroon to secure qualification.

Cameroon has historically been a tough opponent for Nigeria, having thwarted their Olympic aspirations in the past. Waldrum acknowledged the challenge posed by Cameroon's talent and counterattacking style but expressed confidence in his squad's abilities.

The Super Falcons' roster includes key players like Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, and Deborah Abiodun, along with the return of defender Ashleigh Plumptre.

With limited preparation time, Waldrum stressed the need to build on their World Cup performances and adapt quickly to the upcoming fixtures. The team's first leg against Cameroon is crucial in their quest for Olympic qualification.

The match against Cameroon marks the third round of African qualifying for the Women's Olympic Football tournament. The winner will advance to the final round to face the victor of the South Africa vs. Tanzania fixture, with two African teams securing spots in Paris 2024.
