Ralph Hasenhuttl makes Liverpool admission after Southampton defeat

Ralph Hasenhuttl admits his Southampton side have only themselves to blame after failing to capitalise on a “brave” performance against Liverpool.

The Reds still have an outside chance of Champions League qualification after goals from Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara earned a 2-0 Premier League win over the South Coast side at Anfield on Saturday evening.

The visitors fashioned a number of clear opportunities but found Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker in resolute form.

And Southampton boss Hasenhuttl said: “We had big chances, definitely. That was the difference between the teams, they were two times clinical and we had several chances including a one against one.

“It was really very disappointing for us. If you don’t score, you can’t take anything. We tried to be brave and play football and looked quite good, but we leave with nothing.

“Alisson had two or three massive saves. When you want to win here you must have a perfect game and this we didn’t have. It is maybe the maximum we can do in the moment.

“Nathan Tella was always a threat to them and did a good job. We do what we can to be competitive in the second half of the season but tight games haven’t been on our side.”

Southampton, who are still not safe from relegation, were missing a number of key players through injury including former Liverpool forward Danny Ings.

And Hasenhuttl added: “We had chances and you can speculate about whether could have Danny done this or that, and he is important for us.

“But the guys on the pitch did their job not so bad. It’s a pity we didn’t score but the rest was okay.

“In general when you create as many chances as we did, you must take something. That’s the key. We were brave box to box but not in the box.”
