Ralf Rangnick's latest Manchester United arrival will be key in the quest for long-term success

There's definitely been a dramatic change in Manchester United's performances since Ralf Rangnick was announced as interim manager, and off-the-field changes haven't exactly been in short supply either.

Michael Carrick confirmed his Old Trafford departure having done a brilliant job as caretaker boss, helping United recover from their disastrous run of just three wins in 11 games during the final months of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tenure.

Evidently keen to surround himself with people he knows he can trust and who he has worked with before, Rangnick has been joined at United by Chris Armas and Sascha Lense, though the recent departure of Kieran McKenna as he embarks on his first stint in senior management at the helm of Ipswich Town took a lot of United fans by surprise.

Despite some of the criticism aimed at Solskjaer's coaching staff towards the end of the Norwegian's reign, there's no doubt that McKenna will be sorely missed by many at Old Trafford.

He was widely regarded as one of the best coaches at the club and the fact that Rangnick wanted him to stay shows how much he was rated by the German.

McKenna would often be tasked with leading the team's training sessions and so his exit leaves United needing to fill a gaping hole in their backroom staff.

While Rangnick probably has a lot more time on his hands at the moment than he'd have anticipated given the recent Premier League postponements, the job of replacing such an influential coach is no doubt one he could do without.

However, it seems he's already completed his task.

United confirmed on Wednesday morning that Ewan Sharp was the latest addition to Rangnick's staff, with the pair reuniting following their time together at Lokomotiv Moscow and New York Red Bulls.

Sharp worked as a performance analyst when Rangnick was the head of sporting development at Red Bull, and the new arrival also knows fellow new recruit Armas after working with him at Toronto FC.

United confirmed in a statement on the club's official website that Sharp would undertake the role of "assistant coach/analyst", and if he has anything like the influence McKenna had at United then he could well be one of the club's most important signings in recent years.

On the face of it, Sharp's appointment looks to be a solid one given his previous relationship with Rangnick, and United fans should be encouraged by the news the interim boss is keen to bring in people he knows can help the team progress rather than taking unnecessary risks.

McKenna will no doubt be missed at Old Trafford, though the swift nature of Sharp's appointment suggests Rangnick knew exactly who he wanted to replace him and hopefully he can help the German bring the glory days back to the club.
