Ralf Rangnick drops hint to Tottenham as he gives Julian Nagelsmann advice

Ralf Rangnick has urged Julian Nagelsmann to consider joining Tottenham – and the former Manchester United interim coach hinted he could link-up with the boss.

Rangnick worked in a Director of Football role at RB Leipzig when Nagelsmann was coach at the club, and the current Austrian national team boss suggested the former Bayern Munich boss would need a similar figure alongside him should he join Spurs.

Nagelsmann has found himself on the lookout for a new job after being sacked by Bayern last month. He was replaced by former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel in the Bayern hotseat, with the club subsequently going out of both the German Cup and Champions League.

Nagelsmann, who has already spoken about his admiration for English football, pulled out of the race to become the next permanent Chelsea boss last week. He remains a prime candidate to be the new Tottenham boss this summer.

Rangnick was appointed as United's interim coach in December 2021 on a deal until the end of that season but it had been agreed that he would continue at the club in a consultancy role for two years. However, that plan was subsequently scrapped as his exit was confirmed at the end of last campaign.

The 64-year-old took the reins of the Austrian national team to coincide with his United departure and is aiming to guide the nation to the European Championship finals next summer. He has now had his say on Nagelsmann potentially moving to the Premier League.

“I think Tottenham are an exciting club in more ways than one,” Rangnick explained in an interview with Sky Sports. “They probably have one of the most modern, beautiful stadiums in the world at the moment.

“They have one of the best training centres there is at the moment and Daniel Levy, who has been running the club for many, many years.”

Rangnick did add that Nagelsmann would need to have a sporting director in place alongside him at the club. Tottenham’s managing director of football Fabio Paratici resigned from his post last week after he was unsuccessful with his appeal against an Italian Football Federation ban on certain football-related activities.

Paratici was handed a 30-month suspension from Italian football in January after his former club Juventus were found guilty of false accounting, with that ban extended worldwide by FIFA last month.

Rangnick added of the potential of Nagelsmann joining Spurs: “If Tottenham really want him, then I think it would be important if a sporting director was still there to stand by him.”

The former United interim coach continued: “This can be a very, very exciting story. There’s room for improvement, a lot of room for improvement, and yet it’s not a club where you expect to finish in the top one, two or three right away.”
