JAIPUR: A day after a 16-year-old girl beheaded her 7-year-old niece with a sword as part of an ‘occult’ ceremony in Dungarpur, police said it will facilitate psychological counselling for the minor girl currently under detention.
Udaipur Range IG Prafulla Kumar said police will ensure psychological counselling and treatment of the minor. Police also suspect that the girl was possibly suffering from some ailments but did not get proper medical attention as the family may have relied on bhopas (quacks) that abound in the Vagad region of southern Rajasthan.
As per the FIR, the family had installed an idol of the deity ‘Dasha Mata,’ a revered deity, on July 28 to worship after they found that the girl had come to be ‘possessed’ by the deity.
The family had congregated around the deity on Sunday for aarti at 10 pm.
The minor then picked up a sword that was left behind the idol. She went into a bout of uncontrolled rage which the family called in their FIR to the police as “being possessed.” She would jump on the bed, or roll down on the floor in erratic behaviour as she screamed at the family members that she was hungry for four days.
At 3am on Monday, she murdered her niece with a sword. She also attacked other members of her family. A senior Dungarpur police official told TOI that the girl was immediately taken for medical treatment.
“She was visibly disturbed after the incident. Her condition warranted immediate medical attention. We suspect that there might be some psychological problems involved too,” the official said, adding that only experts will be qualified to determine that particular aspect.
