Raith Rovers women's team renamed after David Goodwillie storm with Val McDermid backing

The breakaway Raith Rovers women and girls’ team have announced they will now be called McDermid Ladies.

It comes after the anger at the Fifers' signing of striker David Goodwillie, which has since been reversed, after the civil court ruled in 2017 that he was a rapist.

Stark’s Park backer and world renowned crime writer Val McDermid led the protests over the signing of Goodwillie from Clyde.

McDermid, who has a stand named after her at Stark's in recognition of her service, withdrew support for the club in the hours after the signing.

And after the ladies team cut ties with the club, they have adopted her name and will play their fixtures at a new location.

Club directors and staff also stepped down following the news along with the captain of the women's team Tayler Rattray.

The women and girls section insist that they remain part of the Raith Rovers Community Foundation but have cut ties with the Football Club, condemning the signing at the start of the week.

And they have now rebranded after ditching the Raith Rovers crest and will play their fixtures at Windmill Community Campus in Kirkcaldy - the opposite side of town from Stark’s Park - with the first match against Livingston Dev on Sunday.

SNP MP for Livingston Hannah Bardell announced that she would be joining a group going along to support the newly renamed team and encouraged as many as possible to head along.

She tweeted: "On Sunday a crowd of us are going to support the incredible and recently renamed McDermid Ladies - 2pm at Windmill Park, Kirkcaldy, join us!"
