Rail passengers face day of disruption on Sunday because of electrification works

Rail users will face significant disruption to journeys on Sunday because of electrification works.

Buses will replace trains between Newport, Cardiff Central and Bridgend for the majority of the day and shuttle trains will operate between Swansea and Bridgend.

Great Western Railway (GWR) say some rail services which go beyond these stations will be amended and some will not run as work to electrify the line through to Cardiff Central is carried out.

It means that on Sunday, March 31:

  • Trains between London Paddington and south Wales will start/terminate at Newport
  • Services from Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central will also terminate at Newport
  • Shuttle trains will operate between Swansea and Bridgend
  • Limited Transport for Wales rail services will run between Cardiff Central and Bridgend

Looking ahead to next month, installation of electrical equipment inside the Severn Tunnel during the Easter period will affect all rail services between Newport and Bristol Parkway.

Warning £738m South Wales Metro flagship rail project at risk from a no-deal Brexit

The ridiculous effort commuters are putting in to get the train to work

Alison Thompson, chief operating officer for Network Rail in Wales and Borders, said: “We would like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding while we deliver this work as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan.

“We are working closely with Transport for Wales, Great Western Railway, and other partners to ensure passengers are able to get to where they need to be during this major modernisation work.”
