Every musical theatre kid has their dream role. It is part of the charm of us. We will always bring it up, dream of it even if we’re too old to play it, and it is the character we talk about most of all. And Rachel Zegler’s are perfect.
In a recent interview with Glamour, Zegler talked about dream roles that she might not be old enough to play yet. One she wants to do while she is still young those is play the soprano in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. She just finished a run as Eva Perón in Webber’s Evita in London.
“While I’m still young and sprightly, I would love to do Christine Daaé in Phantom of the Opera,” she said. “That would be a dream come true because I don’t get the opportunity to return to my soprano operatic training roots. And if ever given the chance, I would love to be Javert in a gender-bent Les Miz.”
Now, if you know anything about those shows, that’s perfect casting. For Christine, she is a muse for the Phantom, aka Erik, aka the man who lives in the basement of the theatre where Christine works. The role is notoriously high and hard to sing for 8 shows a week but if anyone can do it, it is trained operatic soprano, Rachel Zegler.
Next, Les Misérables. The show has a lot of strong female characters, one of my own dream roles in the mix of them. While I am an alto with a belt (so it is tight but I can sing Eponine’s songs), there is a lot more roles for Zegler in these kinds of shows. But instead of choosing the women at her disposal, she went with Javert. And I think that’s kind of iconic.
There are plenty of musical theatre roles she’d shine in so what do you want to see Zegler tackle next on stage?
