Race Across the World season five is over! Who won?

Race Across The World duo Melvyn with Brian (BBC/Studio Lambert) -

Race Across the World is finally over. Over a series of weeks, five teams have been racing an incredible 14,000km in pursuit of victory, and a £20,000 cash prize.

Now we have our winners. The remaining contestants - Fin and Sioned, Melvyn and Brian, Elizabeth and Letitia and Caroline and Tom - started the episode with barely a few hours between them.

Caroline and Tom were in the lead, while brothers Brian and Melvyn fell to last place after a gamble to go around Mumbai went badly wrong.

They ended up 17 hours behind the leaders, while sisters Elizabeth and Letitia had only 7 hours, and couple Fin and Sioned had 7 hours 48 minutes.

After a dramatic final dash, it was Caroline and Tom who were crowned the winners, holding onto their lead and bagging the prize.

When they arrived to check in, Caroline burst into tears upon finding out that they were the first, telling her son Tom that “we must never doubt ourselves ever, ever, ever again.”

“I'm lost for words, I can't believe it,” Tom added later, saying he had “never been prouder of my mum; she got me through it.”

It was a tight finish: Elizabeth and Letitia reached the end point only 20 minutes later, with Fin and Sioned finishing 45 minutes behind the leaders and Brian and Melvyn three hours.

It’s been a long old journey getting there. The route this year started at the village of Huangling, near the Great Wall of China, and took the teams through checkpoints including Shanghai, Nepal, and Varanasi in India.

The endpoint was Kanniyakumari, the southernmost tip of India. And they had to do it all on the lowest ever budget of £1000 per person.

As they sped through all three countries, the teams encountered their fair share of hardships too. Divorced couple Gaz and Yin opened up about their friendship – before being eliminated from the competition after failing to reach a checkpoint in time.

Fin, who was racing with his partner Sioned, talked about his diabetes and the brain tumour he was diagnosed with in his early teens.

Still craving your fix of Race Across the World action? Don't worry – there's always the reunion episode next week, and we'll likely see a return of the celeb edition later this year. And in the meantime, there are all the other seasons to binge on BBC iPlayer too.
