Design is thinking made visual

Saul Bass

Saul Bass is best known for creating some of the most recognisable graphic identities and film title sequences of the 20th century, from his instantly recognisable movie openings for Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Stanley Kubrick – North by Northwest and Psycho are still impressive – to corporate logos that are still referenced by designers today.

His famous line, “Design is thinking made visual”, sums up his whole approach, because for Bass, design isn't something to add on top of an idea to make it look better, but a way to take an idea and turn it into something people could understand at a glance – it's why the AT&T logo with its striped globe remains an icon of simplicity.

That thinking is everywhere in his work, and a focus on simplifying complex ideas, in logos created for companies such as Warner Communications and United Airlines, showed that he didn’t rely on lots of detail or visual tricks; they worked because every shape, line and colour had a purpose.

In a time when brands are competing for attention across screens, apps and social feeds, when AI can overcomplicate an idea, Bass’ approach feels more relevant than ever. Good design isn’t about throwing in more effects, more colours or more complexity just because you can – and because AI can add animation, styles and more at a click. Good design, for Bass and really for everyone, is about knowing what you want to say and finding the clearest, strongest way to say it.

For anyone working in branding, UI, illustration or motion graphics, that challenge hasn’t really changed. The tools might be different, but the job is still the same: take an idea and turn it into something people can see, understand and remember. So if you get overwhelmed by a commission, feel suffocated by a workload, or just plain feel like everything is too much, remember Bass and how “Design is thinking made visual”.
