Queues snake up and down Leeds city centre streets as shoppers waste no time

At least 100 people are queuing outside the Sports Direct store on the Headrow in Leeds city centre, as many non-essential shops reopen for business.

The majority of retailers have spent months closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. But changes in government guidelines mean they can now finally open their doors, as long as strict safety measures are in place.

Shopping centres in Leeds, including White Rose and Trinity, are introducing one-way systems, more cleaning and two-metre social distancing rules from today (Monday).

Already, hundreds of shoppers have been queuing on Albion Street in the city centre to get inside Primark at the first time of asking. And now Sports Direct queues are being directed along New Briggate and Mark Lane by store marshals because the tailbacks are so long.

Leeds City Council provided an update on public toilets in Leeds city centre, with ‘city centre ambassadors’ also on the streets to help the people get around safely.
