Queen to miss Epsom Derby after pulling out of St Paul’s service

The Queen will not attend the Epsom Derby on Saturday, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

Instead, Her Majesty will watch proceeding from Widnsor Castle. The Queen was also forced to pull out fro mthe St Paul’s Thanksgiving Service on Friday due to mobility issues.

Her eldest son, Prince Charles represented the Queen for the service which brought together hudnreds of dignatories and officials.

Despite not being able to attend the event, the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell said the 96-year-old monarch was “still in the saddle”.

He added: “But with endurance through times of change and challenge, joy and sorrow, you continue to offer yourself in the service of our country and the Commonwealth.

“Your Majesty, we are sorry that you’re not here with us this morning, but we are so glad that you are still in the saddle. And we are glad that there is still more to come. So thank you for staying the course.”

Despite missing the showpiece event on Friday, the Queen was lit the a royal beacon on Thursday and witnessed the traditional fly-past from Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

Her Majesty, did however, remain in Buckingham Palace for the Trooping the Colour.

Gill Smallwood from Bolton, a chief executive of a domestic violence charity, spoke to the Duchess of Cambridge during a reception at the Guildhall.

Kate is said to have told Ms Smallwood that the Queen had a “lovely time” on Thursday but found the day “very tiring”.

Ms Smallwood then asked how the Queen was, to which Kate said she was “fine it was just very tiring yesterday, and she (the Queen) had had a lovely, lovely time".

The Platinum Party at the Palace will be held on Saturday evening to round off the third day of the Jubilee weekend.
