Queen to invite Boris Johnson and Carrie to Balmoral for first summer without Philip

The Queen is set to invite Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie to Balmoral for her first summer in Scotland without Prince Philip - if Covid rules allow.

Her Majesty is said to be keen to get the Prime Minister and his partner to her cherished Highland retreat if Scottish restrictions are lifted, reports the Daily Express.

The 95-year-old monarch usually sends an invitation to her PM for a long weekend at her annual holiday spot but Buckingham Palace and Downing Street must wait to see if Nicola Sturgeon gives the green light.

The First Minister wants all pandemic restrictions ended on August 9, but it would depend on the data, with the trip due in September.

Last year, the Queen and late husband the Duke of Edinburgh spent six weeks on the 50,000-acre Royal Deeside estate.

But the pair - who had been isolating together for months at Windsor - had to form a close knit bubble with staff and couldn't entertain as they usually would.

Eldest son Prince Charles and Camilla, as well as Prince William, Kate and their children are among those all expected to go on the break.

Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and Edward and Sophie are also all likely to be there.

HM and Philip - who died in April aged 99 - had often called Balmoral their "happy place" and had spent each summer there of their 73-year marriage.

The Johnsons, and possibly a Commonwealth premier or governor general will likely be invited for a picnic with the monarch during their stay.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said yesterday: “No decisions have been taken yet.”

The Queen will return to public duties in the autumn when she is expected to take part in more face-to-face engagements.

Balmoral's main house - the seven-bed Craigowan Lodge - closes to tourists on August 2 and is prepared for the royal visit.
