Queen's Park president opens up on going full-time in a bid to escape League 2

Queen's Park president Gerry Crawley says the club going full-time shows their ambition to get out of League 2.

And he says signing proven players like Bob McHugh underlines that aspiration.

Queen's Park announced in November that they were leaving 'amateur' status behind, and started handing out part-time contracts in January.

Crawley says the coronavirus shutdown hindered the pace of progress, and they can't wait to get stuck in once football returns in October.

"We didn't turn professional to stay in League 2," said Crawley. "We determined a plan, and the manager is busy trying to build a squad that is competitive.

"We're trying to put a plan together to be competitive and be ambitious.

"Football is competitive and we want to give ourselves the best possible chance to play at the highest level that we can.

"Last season we had the hope to get ourselves into a play-off position, and effectively that would have become a four-game season, because those are the games that matter, but Covid and the cessation of football meant we were frustrated in that ambition.

"We're keen to build a momentum and we've recently added Bob McHugh, which has underlined that ambition, to take a proven striker at Championship level and hopefully he can contribute to our success in the season to come."

Crawley said handing out full-time contracts is a reward for the players' loyalty.

He said: "We played a group of players who had committed to the club when we were in amateur status and they were being paid expenses.

"We felt that the right thing to do was to offer these guys professional terms, even though we didn't have to.

"We just felt it was the right thing to do; to treat the players fairly."
